When you start using halogen it can be a little bright at times and a dimmer can be quite effective at just changing up the atmosphere of the room. All around this is a pretty good floor lamp. Many people like to use it for home theater use because the light goes up. You don't really get any sort of direct glare of light on the television, so that is always a nice feature.
